Building upon the parents' perspective also could produce a very intelligent, insightful piece that many people would take something from. What I worry about from reading your post is that it sounds like the writers are attempting to mold the story into a 'teen comedy'. Having not read the book, though, it seems that it takes a more serious look at the subject. I would hate to see a light-hearted approach taken to this adaptation. I'm not knocking a big comedic approach - but only to highlight the subject matter - ala Rushmore or Election, not Date Movie or Ten Things I Hate About You.
