The announcement that he would be playing the joker disappointed me from the outset, and I'm still reserving judgment. I think the Joker should be played by a more mature actor. Yet, I have to admit that I'm impressed with the 'psychotic' Joker look that they captured with the makeup. As far as looks go, it's the first live action or cartoon Joker that captures the insanity of the Joker as portrayed in the Dark Knight comics. The stereotypical purple suit doesn't bother me. Second, I see your point about the size of Bale's cowl, but I also think you're underestimating the size of Christians head. That things not small, and they've got to make sure not to mess up his hair either. Perhaps he also has some gadgets stored up there as well. They redesigned Batman's suit making it easier for Bale to turn his head, but now his head looks huge on side angles. Joker's face looks pretty good, but I was hoping his outfit would be different and more original. "The Dark Knight" may not be the best comic movie next summer. Something tells me "The Incredible Hulk" is going to kick some serious ass. Even though I think this will be a good movie storywise, I’m concerned about the look of Batman and Joker.
